A few months ago while in hospital for something else, the doctor spotted a hernia on my belly button. He said its so small its nothing to worry about and I think he said it needs no treatment, but I'm not 100% certain because I was on Planet Morphine at the time (for reasons nothing to do with the newly identified hernia). Anyway, that was months ago. Today at martial arts class, we did some, erm, "conditioning". This involved pairing up, standing face to face with someone, and punching each other in the stomach while making no attempt to block or dodge the incoming punches. My belly button started hurting, like sore, whereas the rest of my abdomen was holding up just fine. At this point I declared my ailment, and to my horror, was immediately told I must not take another hit, I must exclude myself from this exercise for my own safety. Does anyone know anything about this sort of thing? If you have a tiny hernia that the doc thinks is of no concern, does this mean you have to wrap yourself in cotton wool, or do you just carry on doing what you're doing?
Don`t worry about it, but, I would think you need to avoid blows to the area and be careful when doing anything to strain the abdomen, lifting etc.
Hi Clueless I have had a small inguinal hernia (yours might be a different type of hernia)for 12 months now ,no worries my friend just don,t let it get inside your head and dictate your life style, the powers to be have decided that in their infinite wisdom(In my case) to leave them alone and not repair them has sometimes they can return or it can be sometimes more of a problem than it was before My GP said much the same ,its just a watch and see job,he said does it hurt (no)can you walk(yes) Can you still laugh (Yes)just be sensible when you lift anything heavy, what does that mean I said, well don't lift anything to heavy he said,so how much can I lift I said ,he said whatever you feel comfortable with,I said OK I shall carry on as I did before, and thank you doctor for your non committal replies In fact don't let anything get inside your head and dictate your life style Disclaimer I am not a doctor and this is just my own personal experience in my case, and my way of dealing with it
Yes Val its not easy and can be very difficult but not impossible, some days Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.
Most (male) Hernias are near the groin and I haven't heard of one that high up. If it is that small it may not increase in size or discomfort unless you put undue strain on it. I have had THREE, the first two were the old 'stitch it up' repair the last one was a mesh repair and has been uncomfortable ever since. I now have so much scar tissue that I was told not to get (collect!) another one as operating would be more difficult. A lot of folk live with minor Hernias and as Woo does.
I have a large (long) epigastric hernia. You can't see it unless I try a sit up, at which point I start to do a John Hurt impression in the 'alien' film . My doctor said its big (3+inches ?? at a guess), but she said that surgery may cause more problems, so if it's not causing a problem.....leave it. I certainly wouldn't want to be hit in the stomach if I had a bulging hernia. I think you were given good/safe advice . I think mine developed after surgery to have my gallbladder out. Disclaimer: I am no doctor either, and the views here are purely my own personal opinion

My hernia is so tiny I didn't even know it was there til a doctor pointed it out to me. I think my instructor's insistence that I forego that element of training was mostly for my welfare, he is not medically trained beyond first aid and basic stuff that you need to know if you're going to engage in intensive physical training, but I also suspect there is a paperwork issue too. If he ignored a reported condition and something unpleasant happened as a result, I imagine the paperwork would be a nightmare. I've reached a decision as to what I'm going to do. I didn't know it was there before and it didn't bother me, so knowing its there should also not bother me. However I do know its there and I have to be logical, so I am going to do the 'conditioning' training, but much more gradually. Last night for example, much to my wife's amusement, I allowed her to beat my stomach up, but I made her wear my sparring mits as she did so, so the surface area of her fists was greatly increased and her bony knuckles didn't come into play, and her idea of full force is lighter than 'light contact' at the club I'm not sure if I should be worried about the big beaming face of delight she had on while she was thoroughly enjoying beasting me.

I sometimes do that too. You're right though, one is physically exhausting, requires unfaltering commitment, costs a fortune, often leaves you in physical pain for days on end, and is not understood at all by those that don't also partake of it. The other requires you to wear a suit that looks like pyjamas and shout a lot and occasionally get a light knock.
I had a hernia operation about 6yrs ago..I am very lucky to be here today as it burst..I went to the A and E after complaining about about pain in my groin and testicles within 10mins of being checked over i was rushed to the operating theatre..After the operation the Dr said to me if i didn't go and get it checked out i would off been cream crackered
