So what happens when we all get one?
Do we demand the footage from the bloke behind that runs into the back of you?

No, you also get a rear facing cam (and possibly make additional use of it as a reversing aid?).

      I want one of these

I just tend to wonder where this is all going.
We already have the authorities filming our every move, now we get individuals filming us without out permission, its not really on.

The usual response is "if your not doing anything wrong you, you have nothing to fear", but here we have people filming whatever they want, legally, out on the streets without those involved being asked permission.

I think we need a law against this kind of thing.

Do we really need a law to stop people using cameras in public places?

Well its difficult I know, but I tend to wonder what those people want to do with the footage.
Are we going to find ourselves on "Youve been Framed", etc. without out knowledge.

No a law has not been needed up till now, but dont go near a school with a camera.

Cameras, I have no problem with fixed surveillance cameras, but one on the move is a bit iffy I think.
Dont you have to put up a sign in public places where there are cameras?

For signwritten commercial vehicles doing that to you, the footage could be put on youtube and a link emailed to their employers, plus youtube links could be supplied to the police when reporting dangerous driving.

The nutters who constantly do this need to be removed from the roads.

If you have one, and save 10% off your insurance year upon year that will soon add up to a lot more than the cost of the camera, and that is assuming that you never need to use the footage. If you don't have one, you save the cost of the camera, but then spend on the insurance and have now't to fall back on in the event that a need did arise.

No need - for the most part there is an assumption in this country that anyone being rear-ended is NOT the one at fault, so you (broadly speaking) would have no need to request footage from the vehicle (nor would you have any right to either); the insurer of the vehicle behind might well demand the footage from his vehicle if they are aware that he has a camera though.

I decided to get mine after two close shaves, with one in particular having the likelihood of being one of those insurance nightmares if I hadn't avoided the accident. I had merged onto a three lane carriageway, and as I did so I noticed the headlights of a car in lane two rise as he booted it to get past me - fine and fair enough. However, at the next exit which is only a short distance further on, he cut across right in front of me to get into the exit slip road. I narrowly avoided clipping his rear end as he shot in front, and if I had have hit him he would either have fishtailed and spun down the slip road, or worse rolled up the dividing wall between the carriageway and the slip road (as happened with a very similar incident at the very next junction only a few years back, and that was fatal for the chap cutting in front).

Now, with that scenario above, the immediate assumption made by traffic investigators would be that I had rear-ended matey-boy and that I was at fault. A dashcam however would prove otherwise immediately, even to police at the scene.

That, coupled with the rise in crash-for-cash around the London area and the case was too compelling to have one. And that is before we get onto the cyclists that are going around looking for an argument....

That's a bargain @NorthantsGeezer - where did you get it from? I'm not bothered about HD video or fancy features like a screen, just something that records at a reasonable quality on a loop and is dead easy to set up and use.

I got mine on Amazon. The picture quality is ok. It says HD but that is questionable, however, it would record an accident ok.
You get what you pay for, so don't expect it to record much at night (apparently not many do good night time recording), and it's angle of view isn't huge, but I am happy with it :)

The screen folds up, so more discrete than many. I have mine plugged permanently into the cigarette lighter, which is no problem, and a must because battery life is abysmal.
