The 2015 Chilli Thread

We're back from holiday (8 days) and are pleased to see that the seedlings in the kitchen are doing OK. I haven't checked the plants in the greenhouse yet.

We're mainly growing Shiney Hybrids and Nagas. The S Hybrids usually germinate within 7 days but the Nagas take about 14.

These Nagas were just put in the sprouter nearly a month ago and have become quite leggy in 10 days since we went away. They will be potted up today and they should recover OK. The patch missing is because Mrs Shiney tore off that part to give them to a friend who turned up yesterday.



These were the same Nagas sown one week earlier and potted on into the tray just before we went away.



These are Shiney Hybrids sown 20 days ago and potted into the trays 10 days ago.



When we went away we just left the sprouter on the kitchen worktop and the trays alongside but in a plastic bag - with some stick to keep the bags from dropping on the plants.

I'll have to pop into the greenhouse to see how everything is going in there. Next instalment later, if there's anything to show.

HINT: It's recommended that, when seedlings are a little bit bigger, you brush your hand over the tops of the plants (not just for chillies). This encourages stronger stem growth (recommended by rhs leaflet we once saw). I guess it's like the plants having a breeze outdoors moving them to encourage strength (same as always keep turning the pot round).

 

I had a quick check in the greenhouse. We've lost about one third of our plants. Some were overwintering and some were new ones about 6" high. It also looks as though we may lose another third. Looking on the bright side, that would mean that a third will have survived.

Today's crop . Four different varieties. No Nagas although the plant is still surviving. We pruned it as it was too big for the propagator.

 

Only sown mine in last few days - jalapeno purple and cayenne. Fingers crossed for a better crop than last year!
