Well some friends of ours many years ago both went down with really bad food poisoning, they weren't hospitalised but were very ill, they used to eat out a lot and they don't know where they picked it up. It put me and my husband off eating out.
Val, you shouldn't be put off. Most restaurants are very good with their hygiene and the local authority do give them the 'scores on doors' sign. (The government has changed the terminology now!) Just be prepared to go to the loo and wash your hands before eating. Loos and washing; another simple precaution. The best places will put a bin alongside the door. Wash your hands, dry them, take a tissue/hand towel, open the door with the tissue and drop it in the bin. If they don't have a bin by the door then have a quiet chat with the owner, at a convenient moment. This could be done over the phone. I've got quite a lot of restaurants to do this. Never any problem.
Sorry @shiney . I know you've been mega poorly this Winter and your resistance to infection is probably loiw ATM. But, Howard Hughes syndrome springs to mind for me. Germs are everywhere - just make sure you feed your soldiers well and give them enough sleep. Just my opinion - no offence meant, Jenny
I would never ever go on a cruise ship as my friend often goes on Cunnard Ships and she is always coming back and telling me that yet again part of the ship has got passengers in quarantine because of Norovirus,so I did a Google and was shocked to see just how many cruise ships at any one time has that Norovirus and other bugs laying up passengers We are slowly going off having meals out as I know on occasions one or other of us has ended up with a dodgy tummy (not sickness) after eating out,the last time being when we went out for a meal for Mr Kandys 60th birthday celebrations. It isn't always the cleanliness at front of house one has to worry about but what goes on at back of house My Asian friends always eat with their fingers as that is the way they have been brought up so are not used to having to use knives and forks like us Brits At the moment we are not allowed to visit Mr Kandys father because of Norovirus, but luckily it hasn't affected him yet One of our lady Dr's who is Asian always shakes hands with us when we visit the surgery and our Asian Dentist used to be the same, but Unfortunatley he has now left the dentists practise to go and do work in India
Sorry but i don't know what one of them is, as you can tell i don't go the restaurants, i'll now go and sit in the corner with my straight jacket and pionted hat on
I was brought up with the belief that the more exposed to germs you are the more immune you become to them. Not to decry good hygiene in restaurant kitchens but total avoidance of germs seems OTT
I agree with you on that one I dont worry about germs but then my immune system is in constant over drive so my body is prepared and i feel better when it has something to do On the other hand if you have a weakend immune system restaurants sound like one of the worst places to be
Interestingly, this was a subject topic on the radio the other day. (Yet) another study is advocating the same thing: the cleaner we are, the less tolerant our bodies become because exposure to certain germs is how our bodies build up immunities. Mind you, that may well be true enough in a small environment (e.g. at home) but, when you add 1000 homes to the mix ( or, x 10, x 100, x 1000 etc) then, of course, common sense should prevail The old adage: "coughs and sneezes, spread diseases" wasn't spouted down the generations for no reason
Our Mandy Instantly reminded me of my daughter ... I remember saying when she was little that you could put her in a sterile room and she would still manage to find some dirt to get covered in
Haha that sounds like me I had a friend who looked similar who always remained pristine and clean and i would end up covered in everything and looking well scruffy.
Definitey think you need exposure to all kinds of germs when you are young. (Why is it that the foreign holiday often involves a case of the trots? But the locals dont get it? Its down to their immune system.) Obviously once past a certain age, things tip the other way to some extent, especially if having other ailments. I dont wash my hands very often, I never have, quite often eat with all kinds of dirt on my hands at work. Think I'm probably immune now. But then there is dirt and there is bacteria. Not sure one goes along with the other necessarily.
Well, as a Kid I was always playing in the street and getting covered in muck and melted tar from the road. My Mum always kept an eye on me and when I matched the colour of the ground she would head me to the sink for a scrub saying "You could grow potatoes in the muck on your neck!! In those days, Polio and Scarlet Fever were still a prominent danger so most families took care. But I still managed to catch German Measles, Chicken Pox and Jaundice!!
