According to my book this is Alpine Bartsia.

Also according to my book, it shouldn't be growing South of Yorkshire

Could it have flown in on a Swallow?

I don't know about the flower, Pal, but the book looks like "The Concise British Flora in Colour" by W.Keble Martin. I bought that book because of the art work and the fact that it lists 1486 British species.:hapydancsmil:........just love the art work:wub2:

                African or European?

I agree with this, right time of year for it to be flowering.

Went back and smelt it, it is Ground Ivy. Not seen it so dwarfed before, there are other clumps about here that are a good 6 inches high.

Might be the result of years of grazing?
