    Hi Dear Gardeners,

Long story cut short, I live in a court yard, my 10 neighbours are lovely and we all help out looking after the communal green areas (I am in charge of things I can't kill or dig up by accident :snork:).

For some reason one of the neighbours decided to cut/break the branches of one of the lovely trees one night in November last year. We all hoped that come Spring life would burst out of the damaged branches, but as the weeks have gone on, I can't see anything that look promising.

Until last week! At the bottom of the tree there are now new leaves, so we were wondering if this means that it will recover :spinning: or is it dead and would it be better to cut is down .

I have attached some images to help. The third, the damage branches, the first is what the tree should look like now (there is another one, just hoping that doesn't go the same way :fingers crossed:) and the second image is of the new growth at the bottom of the tree.

I am really hoping that with time it will recover, but sadly I think that won't be the case.

    Many thanks in advance.

      Hi

How awful someone would do this and in a communal garden , was it too close to a window ?
it looks like it has been hacked to pieces, I would class that as vandalism and they should pay to replace it.

If communal who owns the garden as such ? all of you?

Sorry to say but the tree is so damaged it needs to be taken out .
I hope the person has well and truly been told off , and tell them to finish off what they started and dig it out, the new growth will come to nothing and what a eye sore !!

Hi Spruce, thank you for your advice, it is I feared.

No it wasn't near their window, infact it is in front of another neighbour's house (next to them), so not in their view at all, that is one of the reasons why we don't understand why they did it.

I am disappointed that the new growth won't come to anything, but at least I can let my friend/neighbour know and we need to do something as it is so upsetting to see each day.

None of us have had the courage (read 'balls') to speak to them. They aren't a bad person, far from it, but none of us can work out why they would do that.

Very sad, but perhaps having it removed will spark the conversation that needs to happen

Thank you again Spruce, much appreciated.

        Lynne

          Hi Lynne ,

Just a idea but you could grow a rose/clematis/ honeysuckle etc over ...... and a saw to tidy up the ends would make a difference.

A letter through the door if no one wanted to confront them but it is a act of vandalism and should of been reported , if nothing is said , what might they do in the future if they dont like what they see or what others are doing in a "shared communal space for all to enjoy"

Thanks Spruce, that is a great idea, I will talk to some of the my neighbours and see if we can plant something like that to make it beautiful again.

I think one of us, possibly me, is going to have to speak with them personally, it just seems so odd, we wonder if there is something going on, perhaps they need some support or something.

I think everyone is just a bit shocked, but as you say, what about the future and the other lovely trees/shrubs

I hope my next post is of a happier disposition :) and thank you again.

Take care and have a lovely gardening weekend.

            Lynne
