Palms

I had to sort out a Canary date palm that had become potbound today.
it had pushed itself up out the pot and it was impossible to water it.
I've done this a few times where I want to keep them in bounds, and not get too big.

I saw the roots off.
The pictures say it all.

 

You could put that out for a bird to nest in Pete.

 

Treated myself to a few more this week
Chamaerops humilis, butia eriospatha and a trachycarpus princeps hybrid
The Trachycarpus is my favourite. The pic doesn't do it justice, the underside of the leaves are white.

 

Mowgley or Pete you may be able to help me here,

My mum was given one of those ghastly wicker basket jobbies with mixed plants a few months ago. We've sorted most if it out but in it is a clump of those small palms you can buy as houseplants.
(They're about 12" high).

What we want to know is if we repot them on their own can we split them up. There are about 10 in the clump


Also if we grow one pot on for a year could it go outside permanently.

Sounds like an Areca palm. Wont enjoy life outside when cold, fatal if frost gets at it.

May be a parlour palm if so good light down to heavy shade tolerable but not direct sunlight or it will burn up light Dracula does in sunlight

 

Could also be a Rhapis.

Look a bit to me like young plants of Neanthe bella.
If they are, they are not hardy, you could try separating them but you will probably lose a few.

Thanks a lot, I've just had a quick google and I think you're spot on.

As you see it above is with one already taken off so we'll be leaving that clump as it is.
There were some nice fresh toots growing so it should be ok.

I put a Chamaedorea (Neanthe) outside last Summer just to see how long it would survive outside. It survived a few -3/4cs with a small sheet of perspex over but this Spring it was so tatty and suffering from leaf scorch I binned it. I also have one from my Mum's basket planter, I disposed of the other plants and kept the palm but didn't split it and it is now in our kitchen.

 

There is one or two Chamaedorea (microspadix) which are hardy with a small amount of protection.

 

Just giving myself a pat on the back for guessing right
