    I don't know which species/variety it is but it's a Bromeliad

      @strongylodon is pretty good at ID ing bromeliads.
      Hopefully he will spot this.

      Guzmania, one of many hybrids, small flowers will emerge from the bracts, possibly white.
      Keep some water in the 'vase', the rosette of leaves and the compost just moist.
      It will eventually die off but young offshoots will come up around the leaves at the base.

        I have grown quite fond of Guzmania. The leaves keep that colour for a long time and are good value for money, also you can get them in different colours. They look quite good with several in a pot.
