Blank spots on lawn

I got lawn turf laid this time last year. In place the turf never really thrived

Im noticing this year that in some spot the grass just isn't growing and you got brown spots throughout the lawn- just seems to be the sole of the lawn turf you can see - doesn't seem to be any grass shoots at it

This due to probably wear and tear and lawn turf never really took/thrived

I gave the lawn a feed few weeks back and feed had a moss kiler in it so think that these blank spots could be result of the feed killing of moss that was in the lawn

I was going to mix a good dollop of lawn seed into bucket with moss peat and spread it over these blank spots and then top up with more lawn seed over it

Would that be right thing to do?

If you are in doubt about the sub structure you could dig out the bare patch then refill with good soil and re seed. Ideally work done in the early Spring, but will be fine just keep moist.

I would suggest raking off the dead moss or grass with a lawn rake then spike the bare patches with a garden fork to open up the soil for aeration. Sprinkle grass seed and then cover lightly with compost and firm it down gently. Don't forget to water it every day until it's established, unless it rains.

I have mowed the lawn and have raking out over the blank areas. I have spike it with garden fork
I've bought some moss peat and some grass seed
Do I need to do any other prep on the ground now
Also,

• should sprinkle some lawn seed on the bare patches and then cover it with the top soil and then add more lawn seed and water or
  
  
• Should I mix the lawn seed in with the top soil and then spread the mixture over the blank spots and water or
  
  
• some other way or does it matter?

No more prep to the ground is needed, just sprinkle a good amount on the bare patch, cover with the peat and firm down gently. Water well but don't drown it or the seed will wash out.

When you say firm down gently - what do you mean - pat the ground with back of garden spade or press down it with my hands

No, just walk over it gently in flat shoes to firm it, that's all that's needed.

 

How long is it before the grass seed starts to grow? I planted some just over a week ago.

 

It depends on whether you used fast or slow growing seed and temperature, but usually around two to three weeks before it shows.

Now that's a different angle on things. If you've had it more than a year then it's unlikely to germinate.

 

Yes, it is more than a year old. Seed looks the same as it did when we put it down just over a week ago. I think we will need to scrape out the compost and seed and start again with a fresh box of seed. Thanks again.

I pretty much in the same situation as Kazzawazza. I planted the lawn seed around May 25th or May 26th as per advise above. I used a newly purchased bag of lawn seed and newly purchased peat moss bought from reputable store. There is a sealed on date of August 2014 on the lawn seed bag.
Similar as Kazzawazza, at this current point in time I have no new grass growing or appearing as per the attached pictures. The blank spots are still there. The grass you can see is the existing lawn that was there and was growing. The blank spots are places where grass wasn't growing as per original post

I would have expected at this stage that I should be seeing some growth/new lawn shoots appearing ?
In a few odd places you can see few shoots appearing but that's the exception - majority of the reseeded is still just showing the top soil

What could be wrong here - do I still need to wait bit longer or has it just not worked out and indication is that if no new grass appearing by now it never will

It all seems to have been bit of a disaster and looks a royal mess :-(.....

I have been watering it since I set it pretty much every day or 2nd day but not soaking it.

Any advise or recommendations about what to do or how to sort this out ?. I really don't fancy having to start all over again :-(.....

August 2014? That would suggest it's 10 months out of date. If this is the case then it's unlikely to germinate.

Your lawn looks quite long Passport1 I suggest you give it a cut, it won't hurt for the mower to run over the bare patches until the new grass comes through.

Sadly it does look like the seed has failed and you'll have to re-seed. There is no need to rake everything out, just put down new seed on what's already there and cover with a thin layer of compost or topsoil again, then firm down.
