Hi. This is my first post but have been unable to find an answer with the help of much googling! I have a sunny spot by the front door and would like to plant a rose there. I remember my parents having a rose that grew over an arch that gave out a beautiful old rose fragrance which filled the garden with the scent. I've bought a couple of roses - St swithuns (supposedly a strong scent but I can't smell much at all) and Comte de chambord (really has that beautiful old rose scent when up close but not that intense fill the garden smell I remember). I guess partly its number of flowers but I wonder if anyone can recommend a climber with a strong damask / old rose scent? Ive had a look through the archives and see new dawn mentioned, as well as albertine but would really appreciate if anyone had any recommendations from personal experience. Unfortunately, my parents can no longer remember the name of the rose though I have a picture here. I would love to have the same for sentimental reasons, but failing that something similar.
    Thanks

Welcome to Gardeners Corner Albertine. :)

I know very little about climbers but other members will be along to help you with that. Does the rose you like still exist? If so, you could take a cutting of it. :)

          :sign0016: to GC @Albertine

Really hope you can either pluck up the courage to ask for a cutting or can find the right one to buy.

Thanks wiseowl and "m". Funny how roses have sentimental attachments I think more than any other plant. Maybe next time I'm in the area I will ask for a cutting - though unfortunately not close by and would need to survive a trip down the m6! I know they've had albertine over the years though didn't think there was one on the arch. Is Albertine strongly scented and could it be that do,you think? Ispahan looks beautiful, wish I had a sunny garden so I could grow more!

Good evening @Albertine but being a rambler it only flowers once about June/July

'Albertine' is one of the most popular roses of all, a wichuraiana rambler bred in France in 1921. The sweet perfume is memorable, as is the sudden lavish display in summer of coppery pink, loosely double flowers on arching, thorny, reddish stems. It is very vigorous and can be trained into trees. Fully hardy, it prefers an open, sunny site and requires moist but well-drained soil. This vigorous rambling rose is perfect for training over a pergola or along an open wall, and the highly fragrant blooms make wonderful cut flowers. In a dry site, Albertine is prone to mildew.

Both these roses look beautiful, wise owl, thankyou. I am not far from mottisfont and its rose garden as well as a rose nursery so think a visit is in order to try and check those out. In the meantime, some scented geraniums I ordered have just arrived to give me my rose scent fix for a bit! Thankyou for the tips, I will definitely think of asking for a cutting next time I'm near - and can I say what a friendly, helpful lot you are:ThankYou:
