at the back of my Alotment I have a public footpath which is separated by a fence, but has no privacy and is fairly easy access by hopping over the fence. so I am thinking of putting in some hedging to keep out prying eyes and to make a bit of a barrier. I was thinking black thorn as I could use the sloe berries and would look pretty in the spring with the flowers and also some wild roses scrambling through the black thorn. Would this work as a hedge or would I need some thing else planted with them. What do you guys think

Blackthorn will work but it has the annoying habit of sprouting from the roots, up to two metres away from the parent plant. I would go for hawthorn or better still a mixed hedge, say hawthorn (50%), wild roses, hazel, privet. Bare rooted hedging plants will soon be available, which are nice and cheap.

I'd also slip a female holly in (everyone will be keen for the berries!), and maybe a mountain ash, to grow as a tree through the hedge?

Like the idea of the Hawthorne defence
So what sort of spacing do I need for them if I'm going to plant hazel roses etc between.

Thanks for the help guys much appreciated. I'm getting an order together now with all your advice on board. The hedge will span around 10m and so far I've got 10 common hazel, 10 hawthorn, quick thorn, 3 rose red ramanas, 3 rose white ramanas and 2 green hollies this is 28 plants will this be enough or should I add some more.
