If it drains very well the soil is not clay and there can not be a solid concrete base under the lawn. There might be rubble underneath from demolished buildings containing lime mortar. The lime can push the soil ph above 7.5 making the soil too alkaline resulting in your grass not growing well.

I think if it gets chopped up you might get away with it, but best to remove all the stems you can, the roots are not a problem.

If it's growing and it's dry enough, cut it, with the mower on a high setting. The difficulty in a mild winter is that it's often too wet, and I imagine that's worse in Ireland. Swishing off the dew with a long cane held horizontally (you need to squat down) can help to get it dry quicker....

I sow grass seed into plant cells ( A couple of 20 Cell packs) grow the grass on in the green house then plant out as plug plants. Seems to work great.

It looks to me like one of the broad-leaved "weed" grasses like yorkshire fog. They tend to be a lot coarser, lighter coloured and faster growing than even the rye grass that's in "utility" lawn seed mixtures. The solution is the same though - dig them out if you don't like them, fill any holes...

Another possibility - have you moved the things that are standing on the grass? You can get brown patches under things like seats, the feet of swings, etc where they block the light and rain. Brown areas round the edges could also be due to rain shadow from fences etc. I don't think grass right...

I don’t think so as in the cogs were already fitted to the mower. I will cut the grass shorter with the Flymo next time then will try the manual mower after on a shorter lawn.
