I sow garlic in soil. I can see stems growing. I water them regularly. I sprinkle compost every 2 weeks. I put animal fertilizer (handful) after 4 weeks. I can see some stems are turning pale in colour. This is the first time I sow garlic. Kindly suggest what I am doing is right? Should I remove the pale stems?

The pale leaves all appear to be outer leaves, my garlic get a few of these and I just leave them.
    When did you plant them?

Well I planted out garlic very late this year (should have been last year). Out of 10 cloves 9 are growing and showing good strong leaves. I never feed them but they are planted out into soil that has had home made compost added in the winter. Watering was done when planted and very little since.

Not sure why you are adding compost?
You are probably over feeding, I just plant in prepared soil mostly in October, but spring sowing is ok with some varieties, they then get one added feed in early spring and left to get on with it, apart from weeding.

I planted some very late last year (march?) and it never formed a bulb, I think it needs winter temperatures to form it. It is still there and now after winter it is forming a much larger stem. Hopefully a bulb too! The garlic I planted in autumn is also doing well.

I think that most varieties need a cold spell to for a good bulb, but some, possibly soft neck ones are OK if planted early spring.
I had some good ones last year, but not growing much this year, just a couple to keep the variety going to plant in the autumn.
