Depression remains one of the most misunderstood, least talked about illnesses in the world. Indeed, I would even go as far as to say that much of the worlds troubles are borne from those suffering with depression (and many of those troubles subsequently hidden behind a veneer or religion or perceived culture).

It is getting on for 20 years now since I had a really severe depression - so severe that I did try, on more than one occasion, to 'see myself off' - mental health services then were utterly appalling if truth be told, and sadly they do not appear to be a busting lot better now...... I suppose I (like many others) simply got lucky and were prescribed an anti-depressant that eventually worked.

I am much, much better now, in as much as I haven't needed/taken any anti-depressants for the best part of 20 years, and I manage to cope reasonably well with a high stress job, and all that life tends to throw at us. It remains in the back of my mind, however, that I am only ever a few steps away from crossing that line once more - - I don't think it ever really goes away fully.

As a society, we are becoming more tolerant and understanding in many, many ways - however, we still seem to struggle to understand mental health issues; given how common they are, this is quite bewildering really.

I read the article Zigs linked to, and every item described me pretty accurately. Yet I don't think I'm depressed. I have in the past suffered with depression, and sometimes I have proper downers but I think all people do.

I sometimes think depression is a symptom of a problem rather than being the problem in itself. It could be that you're putting too much responsibility on your own shoulders, or that you feel your life is heading in the wrong direction and you don't know what, if anything, you can do about it. I think confidence is a massive issue. Not just outward confidence (which is commonly faked by the way) but confidence to try to break out of the familiar and into something new, even when we know we have to and believe that doing so will be a positive experience.

I find my own garden a bit depressing at this time of year. I prefer the great outdoors.

Yes, so much stuff either dead, dying or covered in fallen leaves, not much fun at the moment, but I try to extend my time out there.

I have a big, sturdy, reinforced, anchored down gazebo that I can work under in all weathers, at this time of year that's mainly potting up strawberry runners, pressing apples for juice and cutting firewood.

At my plot the 6 x 3m tunnel with only a narrow path inside is still a haven in bad weather and my 2nd tunnel of that size is going to have 1/3 paved area inside to make it more cosy. I grow greenstuff for our hens [1] so visit every single day of the year except when on hols.

Using grow lights will enable a re-start of gardening around Xmas, so this is something worth checking out.

[1] Keeping hens is also supposed to reduce depresion.
