    Hi folks. One of my roses (shrub) has one or two stems that are progressively turning brown (from the top down). The side-shoots on these stems have obviously died too. Any idea what this is ? If needs be, I can post a pic but I'm guessing you'll know exactly what it is :) Cheers...freddy.

    :scratch: Think somebody else may know freddy, but I have noticed the new growth on an exposed rose of mine was turning brown like yours & I put it down to the couple of fairly light grass frosts as they call them, that we have had here in the last week or so.
    I pruned the affected growth off & am hoping all will be well..:wink:

    Hi Marley. That was my first thought, to prune it off. I reckon it'll be just fine, but I just wanted to know what it is and what caused it. Cheers...freddy.

    It's happened to one of my roses too-it's in a bed shared with other roses and they are unaffected. I had thought I had forgotten to spray that particular rose down after applying fish blood and bone and it had burned them.

    Don't like that theory now after hearing this from you all. I am very particular when seeing to the roses and it is unlike me to have forgotten an entire rose. It was showing some slight signs of new growth then it went downhill. I have since lifted it and put it in a planter-quarantine and a few leaves are coming through.

    Interesting this one.

    Hi everyone I have put a copy of this Post In Disease section:thumb::)
    [align=center]WITHERED BUDS

    [align=left]Withered Buds usually perish at an early stage.and their flower stalks die ,too.the causes are most likely to be mechanical,In that when the Bud was ready for the fast growing change Into a bloom.It called for the necessary supplies,and they were not forthcoming.The Bud took what was near It and the Plant failed to replace what was taken,and some cells In the Flower stalk found themselves In a state of Hiatus (transformation )thus continuity of supply was Broken,those cells had to die,and consequently all above them died too.
    It Is a rare Puzzle to me to discover why this should happen to an apparently good shoot.The kind of reasons to look for are wounds on the stem,disturbance of the roots by ie.Ants,Rodents ,careless digging Drought especially In raised Beds,an excess of something that has become noxious to our Rose.Or maybe your four legged friend watering the Rose on a Regular basis.Sometimes we just cannot see any apparent reason why our Buds wither,But IMO It is almost certainly a mechanical reason If we could only see IT:)

    BTW, I don't know if this is significant, but I only planted this rose (Peace) a couple of months ago.

    Hate to say this but the rose that I was talking about is dead now, no doubt about it, the new growth has gone completely. The only possible hope is maybe some new shoots will come of the roots-BUT that will be the rootstock.

    Hi Freddy I Would respectfully suggest that the Bud union should be about 1 or 2 inches below the soil level It would help protect the Rose and prevent wind rock,Only a polite Suggestion.:)

    Hi WOO. Do you suggest re-planting it ? Funny thing you should mention wind rock, my wife noticed that the rose was a bit loose in the ground. As for pruning as you suggested, too late, she's already done it ! :dh: As it happens, she's done it pretty much as you prescribed, phew ! :) BTW, thanks for the "polite suggestion", always appreciated :thumb: Cheers...freddy.
