I have read that some people grow potatoes in the same patch of land year on year. Anyone any experience or knowledge of this practice ?

I haven't heard of growing potatoes in the same spot as there can be a build up of disease. I'm also careful of where I put my outdoor tomatoes in relation to potatoes for the same reason.
It only thing I plant in the same place is runner beans, mine have been in the same place for the last 20 years. My grandad has had his in the same place for 60 years.

I know I'm not answering your actual question but I hope it helps a bit! :)
