Cabbage transplanting

I've got a few rows of young cabbage plants (Hispi) I put in about October and are now about the size of a fist give or take. Some have been munched to death and a few others look none too robust. About 60% look good though.

I'm wondering if I can dig out the sickly ones and then move the robust ones to replace them and create a smaller more compact area so I can then plant something else in the space that will be left?

Is it possible to transplant them without a problem do you think? Will they have a big root system as yet?

Are you saying they have hearted up?

Never tried it, but it dont sound like a good idea to me.

 

I did this last September, and it worked fine, the moved ones continued hearting up, then week two I forgot to replace the nets and the Pidgeons ate the lot, I ended up with shredded cabbage
all but one that I kept good and cut for Crimbo
(I did not bare root them, I took them in a clod of earth)

 

No @pete they had not hearted, the size I mentioned was to give an indication of where they were in their early growth.

I went ahead and transplanted them each with a nice clod of earth and reasonably undisturbed, firmed them in well and fingers crossed now.
