Also, 'The English Patient' with Ralph Fiennes. Fantastic stuff and a bit of Herodotus thrown in for good measure. And how could I forget Chinatown with Jack Nicholson? I must have watched it a hundred times but I'd quite happily sit through it again. Empire of the Sun with a very young Christian Bale (aka Batman) is great too.

My son has just mentioned Braveheart. Mel Gibson in plaits, single handedly saving Scotland from English tyranny. :hehe: Sophie Marceau as a very beautiful French princess. Nasty brute of an English king. Good cheesy fun. Look away when it gets to the hanging, drawing and quartering.

My all time favourite is Seven Samurai - the original Japanese version. All my family like it too. Also anything by Mel Brooks is always good for a laugh, Blazing Saddles being the complete antidote for everything PC today.

Any more? Well I suppose Airplane or any Leslie Nielsen films would be appropriate given he sadly passed away last weekend :( Great comedy :)

Gave up & went to bed halfway thru Avatar, what a load of gameboy inspired dingos kidneys was that.

I would have rather watched Lord of the rings & i'd only want to watch that to save myself from having my legs chewed off by rabid badgers.

That reminded me, Schindlers List is an unforgetable film, Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley & Ralph Fiennes are brilliant.

Thank you Music - looks like some good suggestions there.

Ziggy, I agree with you about Lord of the Rings and the rest of that stable. I was invited to friends for a girlie night to watch it and have drinks and a light bight. Should have been a nice evening but that film was so boring I spent the evening in torture ,wondering how I could just go home. My friends loved it

If you want something complety different (no not Monty Python) try the Japanese animated films from Studio Ghibli, they are very surreal but great entertainment, a few of my favourites are:
    Howl's Moving Castle
    Kiki's Delivery Service
    The Cat Returns

The Lord of the Rings films are better than the book; at least you don't have to wade through elvish songs or poetry :). After about page six I'm afraid I lost the will to live.
