Well, that caught some attention I bet ... Well, Algarve has lost lots of jobs in Tourism ... but gained a few in the Phamrmaceutical industry. The municipality of Aljustrel has the largest cannabis plantation for medicinal purposes in Europe, located in the parish of São João de Negrilhos. The investment, which is the responsibility of the Holigen group, already has the largest outdoor plantation in Europe, although this group also invests in this territory in indoor cultivation. There are about 45 thousand feet spread today, over 9 hectares. It turns out that in 2021, production will increase exponentially, as it will be extended to 40 hectares. This cultivation takes place preferably outdoors. Nelson Brito, Mayor of Aljustrel, visited this Tuesday, September 1st, this project that is still in its first phase and got to know the nurseries, plant incubators, but also the different experimentation sites of the different varieties species. The objective was "to get acquainted, with the promoters, of the various techniques that are being used, but also of those that will be the next steps that will be taken for the development of this investment in the municipality", says the municipality. This is a project that aims to go from the countryside to the pharmacy. Therefore, in October, the harvest should begin, using the most sophisticated technological means. At this stage, 65 jobs are expected to be created.
