I wasn't too sure which Forum to put this on, as it's not really pets or livestock. But anyway I was walking around Arley Hall gardens and I thought you might like to see the past owner tributes to their horses and dogs

For the people of the Hall the animals weren't pets as such but working animals for which they had pride and affection for, and of course they were a status symbol too. But you can see how they felt the loss of their animals in the nicely put words.:D

:dbgrtmb: Armandii thanks so much for sharing that with us.. I personally like to see things like that & enjoy reading them..

The home of the Codrington family used to be open to the public until about 20yrs ago.. It is currently owned by Dyson the bagless vacuum man & closed to the public.......
Anyway what I was going to say was they had a memorial area & there were stones dedicated to all the horses & dogs & even a couple of notable cats & the inscriptions on some of them were funny or quirky.... I wonder if they are still there.....

Apparently Spike Milligan has a memorial stone which reads:
"I told you I was ill" :heehee:

Apparently its in Gaelic. I'm sure I was talking to someone on here who has seen it, might have been Kindredspirit, not sure.

While we're on memorials, this is the tombstone of Georgie Markov.

He was the Bulgarian writer who defected here & was murdered, probably by the Bulgarian Secret Police, by having ricin injected by an umbrella.

He's buried in Whitchurch Canonicorum, I found him when working on the church there. One side is in Bulgarian, the other English.

Here is the grave of Edward John,
        For when his bicycle stopped,
        He still went on.

        :D :D :D

The most memorable graveyard, that I've been in, is the one on St. Mary's in the Scilly Isles. Virtually everyone, who didn't die at sea, lived to be over 90 and in lots of cases reached 100.

If I had lots of money when I retire, (fat chance! :() I'd love to live there. Do you think I'd have a good chance of reaching 100 then? :)

          Here Lie the Remains
          Of Colourblind Ted.
          Thought the lights were green
          When they were Red.

He was aproaching 100 but didn't appear to be speeding.

Wasn't you I was talking to about Spikes' grave then ? Might have been Music then:what::DOH:

As I mow the churchyard I read the headstones quite often & there is one that makes me smile every time I read it.. It says
I just think the" killed by accident" bit is amusing, then the dates get me, hers all the 3s & his all the 4s so to speak.. That bit is a bit spooky.. Amazing what love can do I suppose.... I often wonder if he died of a broken heart or by accident too.... :sunny:

Glad you like the tributes to the horses and dogs, Marley, although the Dog's stones were quite worn and faint even without the camera.

Also at Arley Hall is this:

It's a tiny Cottage in the gardens that the Ladies of the House used as a gentle place to have tea, and inside are these:

As you can see the past owners were poetically inclined and these are poem tributes to his wife, daughters and friends. I leave the eye straining and interpretation of the old English letters and verse to you:D
