Can anyone help me solve what is eating my runner bean plants, put some in sunday, and 2 have had leaves eaten, have put slug repellent around them sprayed with diluted garlic [garden friend told me that] and also have netting oner them, the soil is new top soil and they are in a 3 foot high trough.
Last year I had a big problem with slugs, hence the new topsoil,

Most likely slugs and snails, are there tell-tale slime trails?

Little brown furries love to chew the tops off to get to the bean/pea in the soil. I cannot sow in open ground, I have to start all of my peas and beans indoors and wait until they are quite tall with strong roots before planting out.

That looks like slug or snail damage to me. I usually wait until they are a bit bigger before I put mine out. They can still get eaten but are more likely to recover.
Best way to find out is to go out when it's dark with a torch and if you find any you can have the satisfaction of squashing them. I leave a half brick or two around for that purpose!
They are by far my worst pest. Second comes aphids.

We usually grow ours in pots until they are about 30cm high and then plant them out and put a ring of Copper Tape around the base of the plant and another ring of tape just below where the stems are tied to the canes.
That usually stops them eating all the leaves though they will still get any that touch the soil.

Don't understand if it is the soil, as last year, before we changed it all, my carrots were being eaten as well, am going to go out there when it is dark and see what I can see.

Could be caterpillar too. One just chewed foxgloves in my garden. I went in the dark last night and saw it munching.

Suggest you plant some more seeds, there's lots of time yet. Going to need some spares, going by the current forecast for next week....

Good idea, and will not put them in the same place, might find a large pot can put a wigwam in it, it's nearly dark so will go hunting soon,

Went out last night with torch, no sign of anything, this morning all looks OK, have also put fine netting over plants, so fingers crossed.
