@Ergates Target is having problems with general theft and organised retail crime gangs so is closing some of the worst hit stores.

I see farmed prawns from the far east and south America in the SM freezers and have bought some occasionally but their texture and flavour are not good so I prefer to buy local when in season and do without otherwise.

Well, that can work both ways of course. Disenfranchise one group, appeal to another possibly larger one.

Strange as it may seem. I couldn't care less whether a company has a diversity and equality programme. I shop where I get the best value.

The staff do though and if they are treated fairly then they may do a better job and give you better service.

The SM I use most does not open on public holidays, closes the 2nd of Jan without loss of pay for staff to thank them for the hard work and increased business over Xmas and NY, provides free STs for female staff, has quiet periods for neuro divergent people and the frail who like lower lighting and no announcements or muzak, has a cash desk for those who want to chat and others for those who rapid service, self-scanning for those who want it and a loyalty scheme that is well managed and weekly special offers such as 10% of fruit and veg/dairy/etc.

Not all shops in this group have those policies as they are at the manager's discretion. It's not the cheapest brand of SM but it's not the most expensive either and has a wide range of products available for people like me who have wide tastes and the staff are always helpful.

If I were in the USA I would not shop at Walmart - the diversity programme is about equal opportunities for ethnic and social groups as well as sexual orientations. I don't want to give my money to companies who blatantly choose not to be equal opportunity.

I don't agree with the conclusion that you'll get better service because of a DEI directive. Getting hired because of your skin colour is not fair to all. I shop at walmarts when they have good deals and I believe service went downhill these last years. Creating places where your customers never see anyone who looks like them can be alienating. It is better to hire the best suited for the job which is fair and makes a good business model. People of all backgrounds qualify for various jobs in these stores not just those of colour.

I would estimate that I visit these stores at least every 10 days and that gives me first hand experience.

I will say that they, plus many other large stores here are very good at hiring those with challenges to do jobs they are capable of performing and that they don't get bored with while earning a paycheque.

Walmart is presumably not discriminating against any group. It is merely not favouring on the basis of diversity.

@ViewAhead when were you last in a Walmart? Dropping the DEI policy has not changed anything that was already in place. My local Food Basis doesn't have that policy but their staff is diverse, friendly and seem happy :)

There is a movement in corporate America to roll back on diversity commitments on the grounds that they are woke. It's all part of conservative political, religious and business groups bullying others into toeing their white lines. See this report from the independent, international Associated Press.

                      https://apnews.com/article/walmart-dei-inclusion-diversity-34b06922e60e5116fe198696201ce4d9

I do think jobs should be given to those best qualified and that pay should match productivity but too many companies already transgress when it comes to women and race. This latest move in the US is unsavoury to say the least.

I can't quite understand how favouring on the basis of diversity is not discriminating. To favour on the basis of anything but ability to do the job seems to me to be discriminatory.

When I employed people I was most definitely discriminatory. If possible, I tried to employ people that came from broken homes or from difficult circumstances and that was intentionally being discriminatory. I also used other discriminatory factors.

Yes, but did you ignore applications from people who were the wrong colour or the wrong sex or the wrong side of the tracks without even looking at their application? Positive discrimination means being open to talent lying untapped in diverse groups.

I always worked in places where if you could do the job you kept it, if not they got rid of you.

I'm not sure anyone was discriminated against other than your ability to do the job.

It all seems so complicated these days.

I dont think we have Walmart here, do we?
