Given that many drones are now fly by fibre, difficult to jam, the Ukrainian countryside is now draped in kilometers of fibre; so what does that do to the environment?

@Obelix-Vendée, it is nothing to do with the "dumbness" or otherwise of US citizens. They only had two choices. Both were terrible options. They had to choose one. Intelligence, reading age, education level, etc, of voters is irrelevant where you have a corrupt and manipulative political system, designed to look like democracy but actually functioning to promote wealthy cartels.

That will be a drop in the ocean compared to the GHG emissions the war has caused though. Global militaries are ranked 4th behind, China, USA and India in GHG emissions, that does not include conflict. When we increase spending on our militaries, it increases our carbon footprint.

The US militaries consumption of petroleum produces more GHG than many countries do, with the US military being the largest institutional consumers of petroleum. When you take militaries carbon footprint into account with industries, I reckon the USA is probably on a par with China, if not more as the worlds biggest GHG emissions.

Good old Nevil Shute. From what I can remember, they made a lot of his books into films including A Town Like Alice.

I remember seeing the film On The Beach when it first came out and wasn't keen on it because it was depressing - but an extremely well written book. It starred Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, a young Anthony Perkins.

We had A Town Like Alice and Trustee from the Toolroom at home when I was growing up didn't get on at all with A Town Like Alice. So I went back to Homer and similar.

I've been expecting Trump to refer to the latest attack on Iran as a "Crusade" since it started.

American Presidents aren't as stupid as we think. If you notice, they never start wars anywhere near their own back yard, so they are never directly in the firing line. The fact that thousands of their troops may die seems to be irrelevant.

Ah - my fault @Obelix-Vendée . However if we are taliking about immigrants, I thought President Trump's mother was an immigrant too. Like Father, like son ?

According to an article on the World Service, more Methane is being produced than carbon dioxide due to agriculture, land waste, oil, gas and coal production.

@ViewAhead - agreed there is only a choice between 2 when it comes to presidential elections but you do have to wonder about all the primaries and pre-primaries that lead to their selection. There have to be many dumb and dumber people at grass roots level stupid enough or gullible enough or with vested interests to get those unsuitable candidates to the selection.

@Philippa - his 1st and 3rd wives plus his mother were immigrants as was his grandfather who left Germany to escape the military draft (family tradition then) and ended up in the Klndike where he ran a restaurant and brothel - family values when it comes to attitudes to women too.

Like in this country your average GI comes from the poorer less privileged communities and areas of the country. So don't really count if you are from a privileged background, running the country or a business.

Trump promised no more endless wars would be started by him.

believe it or not there are reports of his "less priveleged" voting base who can put up with the tariffs and tantrums and even the Epstein files but this is a last straw for theM Have to wonder if the bereaved failies of dead or badly wounded cannon fodder will still vote MAGA next time, assuming Trumpy doesn't manage to scupper the elections in November. he's certainly working to that end.

I don't think this will be an endless war. Trump gets bored quickly. He will just withdraw and proclaim it all a marvellous success. Then in 10/15/20 yrs, when Iran has put its nuclear prog back together, the same will happen again.

The situation isn't solvable with bombs (or maybe any other approach), so regular disruption is an easier option.

For a lot of Americans in poorer areas of the country, the military is almost the only available option that will guarantee them employment and healthcare.
Trump, being a one trick pony, thought his usual tactic of bullying would produce the results he wanted. Unfortunately, he has come up against a regime that isn’t going to fall for that one, and doesn’t actually know what to do. And now the ‘revelations’ from some of the military commanders indicate that we are now watching a ‘holy war’. Whatever is going to happen, might drive Hegseth back to drink.
