Interesting, and disturbing: Librarians in UK increasingly asked to remove books, as influence of US pressure groups spreads
I nearly ended up doing a PhD on this chemical back in the early 80's, my tutor at the time was working on what was hoped would be commercial insecticides.
Yes, whereas British books have been banned historically on an individual basis, such as “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” , “1984”, and “A Clockwork Orange”, as one-offs, and not for their classification number in the Dewey Decimal system, the greasy tide of censorship is oozing into our lives even in our local libraries.
In the USA some places are banning The Grapes of Wrath and To Kill a Mocking Bird which are considered to be essential classic reads by most people who read literature.
What is the world coming to? Welsh couple stranded after being let off packed GWR train for air Unbelievable. It makes you think they did it deliberately to ease the crowding. I remember travelling by train through France in the 1970s and the guard came and apologised to each and every one of the passengers, individually, because the train was going to be a few minutes late in arriving at our destination.
Thesse days they have announcements and also an electronic "ticker tape" announcement running on repeat in the carriages. Back to the USA for me, via Japan. Trump tariffs like "delinquent kid extorting somebody"—Japanese lawmaker
I notice that he's got bored with trying to arrange a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia; so he's moved on to try and bully Iran. Has anybody told him how many plants are illegal migrants to the US? I suspect not.
This is a photo of Boston's old North Church last night on the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's midnight ride. This church is where lanterns signaled Revere to warn the Minutemen of the approaching troops. Once again, tyranny is at our door. I want to take a moment to share an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence. Several scholars have noted that the things the Founding Founders were upset about when they wrote the Declaration of Independence ring true today. Consider a few of the grievances the Declaration lodges against George III: "For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world: For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent: For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury: For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences: For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies" Sound familiar?
Well done Putin with his 30 hour "ceasefire" - broken within minutes of his announcement apparently. One can only assume that this was his contribution to the supposed Peace Talks. Doubt whether any Ukranians are particularly enjoying their Easter. It's taken Trump a long time to realise that he cannot halt wars just by snapping his fingers. I am guessing he'll still be holding to his plan to rip off Ukraine's mineral wealth whatever happens. Gaza's future is still hanging in the balance after his plans for a "solution". Keep hearing about these phone calls between leaders - latest being Starmer and Trump but the content is never made public so the citizens involved ( whether it be warfare or trade ) never have a clue as to what is being said/agreed/disagreed on their behalf.
