Japanese maple seedling
Interesting, thanks Whis4ey. I was assuming that bog standard Japanese maples (rather than "poncy" ones) would be easy to propagate, but if seed is the only easy way that explains why they do them...

Should be able to see the graft - it will be a thickened part of the stem, and usually only an inch or two above the ground - about strimming height in fact :(

Junipers. To prune or not to prune?
Our Juniperus horizontalis clearly isn't aware of of this.
It gets a light trim most years just to keep it within bounds.

Soil, stone or grass around the base of trees?
Around mine I either have borders or I mulch with wood chips sometimes over weed fabric.. My fruit trees are all mulched with well rotted wood chips every year..

Tree pruning advice for a complete novice!
You say it's a windy area and I'm surprised they are still standing. They are young trees and should have been staked when they were planted.
