Great idea Dim, I think they would fare much better in pots (than Boo's). Those Zebrinus look nice my personal favourite is Molinia Caerulea "Transparent" which I think is lovely to look through/over when it is fully grown in, say, August-November

Well the LATEST you should prune is mid-late july so you could wait for a few weeks or just bite the bullet... It will probably be fine. Probably the best way of doing the pruning if you happen to be moving it; less roots means it can sustain less plant which is sorted through removing a trunk....

Thanks for letting us know Quaedor36. It doesn't matter what route you and your son decided to take, you've both decided what was the best way forward. Privet hedges have been around for a long while and they still stand the test of time.

I think this is a lesson for us all. That before you plant anything in any space you think of the adult size and will it fit. I know this is too late for this treasured tree. I only trim the stems or branching of my Mags, that stick upward to the heavens, other than that, I leave it alone.

Yep, sounds like a small growth spurt. The change in weather from dry and hot to really wet would also explain the bark.

Hi Pam I think a couple to choose from Colt , Avium ? I think 50 / 50 if it turns out to be a good form but if me I would give it a go , nothing to lose plus I would plant in my hedge if not that good. Spruce

I chose Phillyrea latifolia for mine (only started this year), it is evergreen and hardy and reasonably fast growing . It is a bit of a personal choice, I also have Luma apiculata (Orange barked Myrtle) for the lovely stem colour, but it is not fully hardy everywhere in the UK.

That's great, mine flowered last year but it's much slower starting this year, the leaves have barely emerged so it might not fower this time, it's a fair bit older too.
