I 've had one die on me this year, not sure what species it was as I grew it from a packet of mixed seed .Take a small slither of bark off with a pen knife, if its brown underneath its dead, do this further and further down the stem until you find it showing green.

Try a nut tree. You should be able to get a filbert, hazel or cob nut to germinate by just sticking it in the ground and get a few nuts off it after 4 - 5 years. A sweet chestnut will grow easily but you'll probably have to wait 20 years for it to fruit! If you want fruit, you could grow...

If it's on 'council land', contact your local tree officer who will come and look at the tree for you. Even if you are not sure whos land it is on, they would also be able to help with that.Hope this Helps!

Thanks to both of you.Yeah I suppose it's just an average green variety apple tree. They do get pretty big though!I only eat them raw or juice them, healthiest option of course.Yeah I suspected they weren't ripe, but they tasted fine to me.

There's some huge pot grown citrus trees at Ventnor botanics which get put into the entrance/reception area of the temperate house over winter and there absolutely covered in fruit

Its definately clipped.To give you a head start try contacting topiary nurserys and get a sphere shaped standard one this way a lot of the hard work has been done and you only need to woory about clipping it.
