I bought a smallish one a couple of years ago at a reasonable price, I did grow one from seed many years ago and eventually planted it out, I think it was around 1990ish, the winter that year was really bad, and it was dead by the end of the following winter.
So I've always been wary of planting them out these days.

I did mine from seed in the mid '80's and it had survived until last year. It mainly lived outside once it got to a reasonable size but always with protection..........straw, fleece, that insulation stuff you put behind radiators and an old shower curtain. It started off in Bedfordshire but apart from it's years in France and Spain, it has been down here in the SWest so does make a difference. The 4 "pups" are doing well - GH and indoors. I suspect they will last longer than I will
