Thought the builders & contractors would be interested in this picture.
All the cabins up in this resort area located on the Canadian Shield----which is exposed huge rock ---the cabins were positioned on the various rock or ledges. The cabins are above the rock about 3 feet, there are thick steel legs anchored way under the cabins, I guess leveled to the different rock bumps, and on the corners and mid center of the cabins there are these piles of smaller rocks sandwiched together with concrete and sometime a wood wedge (I guess for leveling again) and of course support. Must have been a feat to see them being built, as this area is an island. I am told the whole river freezes over in the winter so that a truck could roll on it. Any way under the cabins, are the water piping and plumbing, but all seem to be made out of heavy rubber or white plastic. I guess again for freezing. [IMG]

It looks a bit slapdash to me. I definitely wouldn`t fancy living in one.:thumb:

    It doesn't look very safe.

I did wonder about the safeness also. Put there are about 20 built like that, that have been there for years through all sorts of storms. When inside, and that is where we stayed, it felt solid.

Dont think it would comply to building regs. over here:D.

But I'm sure that pile of rocks is not the only kind of support, is it?

Just thinking it may just be covering up something a bit more substantial

Looks like my kind of place though.

It does look like that---LOL If you look to the left under the house (naturally) part of the trellis is in front of it, you'll see the "steel" something from the rock to the bottom of the house. Evidently with these rock faces, no drilling can be done, or allowed. Would have loved to see how the houses were built.

Ah, I can see the steel now. The trellis isn't a support after all, it stops grizzly bears getting underneath :lollol:

I can see timbers underneath as support, but I thought that maybe, the rock pile was just cosmetic and hiding a piece of steel work.

I guess the weight of the building is enough to stop it moving, but I would imagine winter frosts would very quickly attack the mortar between the rocks.

I'm sue the trellis would be no match for a grizzly.:D

More likely to stop kids crawling underneath and getting squashed when the whole thing collapses.:hehe:

There are no large animals on the island. Lots of birds. and loons in the water. I am told raccoons are there also.
Picture of the rest of the cabin, taken from below the bolder it was on. It was nice to sit in that screened in porch and look out on the river in front. Very calming.

    View from porch---the French River.

By the way the Canadian Loons--a duck type--make the prettiest noises. I googled and will get a CD of them.

Over in YOU Tube they have some samplings of the sound they make--here is one of them.
