I've lost a lot of my strawberry plants and when I've looked at them this afternoon they're just crowns with roots missing. One of them came up in the photo below with little notches missing all over the crown.

I've got 4 plants left out of about a dozen. Is this likely vine weevil? I can't think of anything else that would eat roots like this but couldn't see any grubs in the compost. Or maybe the rest have just rotted off or died off? Are strawberries prone to do this? They're about 2 years old.

Add to your list of suspects : leatherjackets, wireworm, wood lice. Would be worth tipping it out and finely sieve to possibly discover, although may have been eaten last season. Wireworm have , I think , a three year larvae stage, leatherjackets two.

Oh. There's loads of compost, it's in a raised bed. I've just planted some seeds into it today as well so I may be feeding whatever it is a full salad.

Rummage around in the soil and youll probably find the cause. If they are in pots you could try lifting all of them out, shaking off any grubs and pouring really hot water into the soil to kill everything then replanting them when its cooled back down. If its ground soil that probably wont work as its too much space.

Sorry to add to your woes but just picked the first strawberries in the tunnel. The sun has been warming it up and the fruit were a really good size and the taste.....fabulous.
