Heavily influenced by learned philosopher & forumite Professor E.E. Scrung, I am hoping to develop a new personal philosophy which I have named hedonistic frugalism - having a bloomin' good time for very little outlay, in other words. We've got the gastronomic angle fairly well covered at the moment - but how about all those other things that enhance our existence on the planet? I'll start with a few: 1. Free books. Courtesy of the local library system. Of course, I'll have to pay down my £23 fine debt first, but after that all those lovely books will be mine, all mine. Temporarily. 2.Half price cinema tickets. Our local rag does vouchers on Mondays and Thursday which allows two for one at our local indie cinema on Mondays. If you don't live near Leicester you could try Orange Wednesdays who give the same to their customers. 3.£30 for a month's trial membership for Bikram's Hot Yoga, branches in most large towns. Please share any other bargain cultural and leisure delights which you may have got your hands on!
I don't go abroad (as a rule), I think our own country has much to be explored/examined/learned from. Walking, as opposed to public transport, when appropriate (healthy and cheaper than the gym) I have a thunk and get back to you on this one ...
I'm building a time machine to go back to the late 1970s to mid 1980s. Well, I'm not, but my idea is along those lines. It occurred to me that in our household, things considered as 'recreation' are far more expensive and far less fun than we seemed to have when I was a kid. When I was a kid, a day out was usually within about 10 miles, to some local countryside spot or woodland, where dining out meant picnic and fun meant kicking a ball about or playing rounders or making a tarzie or a zip wire made of cheap nylon rope tied between two trees
