Onions

    When is the best time to pull onions they are a fair size is it best to leave until end Sept ???

    The tops should go yellow and start keeling over on the plants. Mine have already done so and I am just waiting for the weather to dry up before lifting, but mine were started from seed in Jan/Feb. The next door neighbour has onions that still look very green and upright so look at though they are still in active growth.

    Yeah, I leave them until the tops have all but dried up. That might not happen this year with the rain, but some of mine have started to bend at the neck.
    All the time there is some growth going on, on top, the ultimate bulb should be bigger.
    Lets hope we get a hot dry September (not much chance I dont think)

    All the tops are over and drying out however the wind may have blown them over like you said it may be worth waiting for some nice weather to dry them out a little. I put onion sets in May and early June they have come nice in pots.
