Passionfruit

hello. I wonder if you can help me.
I live in the Gironde in SW France. I have a rampant passionflower which has lots of fruit. only thing is they are orange and when I open it, the seeds are a deep pinky red, with no juicy flesh, as the prorpl/brown passionfruit I have seen. What I would like to know is... are they edible? The only info I have found on the net is that they fall off the vine when they are fully ripe.

Do you know what the type of passion flower it is?
The usual one grown for fruit is edulis, all passion flowers produce fruit of some kind and although they are probably not poisonous they may not be particually nice to eat.

 

I have no idea.. the flowers are the usual pale purply blue and white. I inherited the plant when i bought the house. I have just looked at T&M's pages and seen that they have passionflower seeds where the fruit are orange AND edible.

 

Have you tried them?

 

Hell gill.fr and welcome to GC! It sounds like you have the P caerulea, otherwise known as the Blue Passion Flower. The fruit of this Passion is egg shaped and yellowy orange. It is edible but they are not especially delicious!

 

hi lady. thanks. the seeds are a nice colour though and it could be beefed up with a bit of booze to make a good sauce for ice cream or..... .

pete, i did try a tiny bit of the juice yesterday and, so far, have suffered no after effects. it was sweet and not at all drying in the mouth

I don't know if all Passion Flowers are the same ... and maybe Pete will come back on here and advise as he's one of our "experts" on them ... but my caerulea shoots up everywhere, an I haven't particularly got it in a place where I want that to happen! :eek: I also have a shocking pink one (can never remember the name of it) and there's a picture under Pink Passion in Container Plants ... there's actually a discussion going on a little further down in Today's Topics! Have a look as there's a couple of other good pics there as well!

Caerulea as far as we are concerned in the UK is the most rampant, even here it can get out of control, as I believe a few others can in a milder climate, just wished I lived somewhere frost free. :D
Dont know for sure,(and I stress this) but I dont think any passion fruit are poisonous, its just that some are more pallateable than others.
