Are there any recommended potatoes that you can plant now? What else is suitable for planting at this time, ik.e onions etc?

    Hi Surfer,

I've just planted charlotte seed potatoes, the nursery held them back till now so we can get new potatoes for Christmas. The halms will get killed off by the 1st frosts but the tubers should be ok.

Also just sown spring onion seed & a further sowing of mixed salad. Will be sowing yellow mustard early sept for winter greens.

Kale is always a good overwinterer, like wise, just planted out 4 purple sprouting broccoli

Hi there,I am just looking for some advice on potatoes.I have been planting them for a couple of years now but every time i dig them up there is very little skin on them.Is it just the type I am planting(not sure what it is)or is there something I am doing wrong.I followed the instructions on the back of the packet and they taste ok.

    Hi Craig,

The skin on new potatoes is very thin, nothing wrong with that, you can eat the skins too, thats where most of the vitamin c is.

If you wanted thicker skined one for storing, let the halms die back & then wait 2 weeks before lifting.

Good evening Craig and welcome to the site. Why did you dig up the rhubarb?

I pick a couple of the stalks and it was hollow inside and a couple of people said it had gone to seed and would not produce good rhubarb any more

Craig, all you needed to do was remove the flowering stalk. It won`t affect the remaining stalks.:gnthb:

Hi, does anybody have experience of planting potatoes in VERY weedy, uncultivated ground? We are taking over a garden which has been untouched for years. Once I have cleared a few overgrown shrubs and hacked down the nettles, I wondered if it would be worth trying a few potatoes for xmas, or do you think I should get digging this winter and wait till next year?:help:
