Nature or nurture - or perhaps some of both. I found it fascinating, having taken over my late father's research into his and my family, to find how many of them were either farmer's or nurserymen.I didn't know I came from farming roots - my father was a civil servant as was his father - both keen veggie gardeners. Gonna be real interesting to see what runs in the maternal line - though I already know that nursing does - having recently discovered my long dead grandmother was one as well as my mother

Mind this genealogy thing is a bit addictive especially with so much on line :D

    Anyone else tracing their "roots"

Hi Fran, I am also trying to trace my roots on my fathers side. I have been trying to find my grandmothers birth certificate no luck so far.The problem is not knowing where she was born and the exact year, she was brought up in India. The internet is a great source of info if you know what you are looking for and are willing and able to pay for it. I am planning a trip down to London this month to have a search in East India Company records to see if I can find anything there,it is very addictive. [IMG]

Began tracing G-uncle,K.I.A .WW1. Somme. But wasn't prepared for the info found at local records office etc:..Turned out he was in fact, G-G-uncle!
Because of old fashioned values and so called family shame the task was made worse as older members refused to tell all.

    Just a thought but,
Maybe someone might know of.... Surname"Allman"with links in/near Stratford-upon-Avon....Trying to trace G-Grandmother info, last known location was during 1901.

Mmm difficult one Dalbui, tis easier tracing here in this country - well at least back a certain amount of the way. I'm going to be facing the same trouble with my maternal grandmother's family as she was born in Sri Lanka and though I have her birth certificate - from my father, further back is going to be difficult. Still working on my father's side at the moment - and there I'm lucky most were in or around the same village in Somerset. There was a book written about it - and reading it I find some of my ancestors were prone to falling foul of the law - either animals straying, or drinking.

Paladin - know what you mean about finding out things that went on in the past - but its the people side that makes it so interesting. In respect of your great grandmother if you haven't got access to the censuses - then e-mail me with as much detail as you have of her, and I'll take a look through my links.

My maternal grandfather worked for a famous seed company in Norfolk in around WWII. He was responsible for the creation of many new plants that are in common use nowadays, a sport of mums being one of them, also some vegetables. However, being employed as a 'jobbing' gardener, he never profitted from his efforts and earned little more than a farm labourer.

Fran.. [IMG] Thank you so much for the information you found. The link you gave helped me to find two headstones, one of which had an epitaph to the person KIA in France!..Also discovered his Father had progressed from labourer to Baliff.
Hope to follow up on G-Gran info soon.

    ;)

Interesting to search isn't it but don't be too surprised at finding a 'nasty'. Husband's cousin was searching and found that a GGG relative was hanged for murder!

But then on my paternal grandparents side I find that a GGrandmother was in fact Spanish - and I always thought my forebears were true blue Norfolk born and bred! :D

I've found that my family is too complicated for words - one generation had such a spread in age between oldest and youngest sister, that the oldest sister was married to a chap, diead, and he married her youngest sister, and the children of both marriages are aunts and niecs at the same time! I gave up at that point!

    P. S. The discovery that I have an Aunt Graham (sic!) added to my conviction that I should leave well alone!
