I don’t know if I’m woke or unwoke. I think I’m just going to crawl back inside my shell and leave it to those who think it makes a difference.
I'd certainly rather be considered woke than count myself among those who use it as a perjorative term.
Sorry about that, @Tidemark. I shouldn't worry about being woke. Things move on fast and woke issues change constantly. The dedicated woker needs to be jolly nimble to keep up.
Right-wing is often used pejoratively. As is gender critical. And that's before you start to consider acronyms (sorry, @shiney ) like TERF, made up for the sole purpose of being pejorative by those who are determined to stamp their views on society whilst viciously stamping out any dissent.
Woke is over used these days, it just means "Far" left wing IMO, bearing in mind anyone who doesn't agree with them is obviously "Far" right wing. Is nobody just normal these days and have varying opinions about all things.
WOKE began as an African American term so, amongst racists, bigamists and any other hate-ists it is going to be used and mis-used to denegrate anyone they wish to diminish, neutralise or demean. The rest of us need to rise above and be tolerant of differences of size, colour, gender, religion except when they include such hate, intolerance and cruelty as we are currently seeing in the USA ICE activities or greed such as Trump and his billionaire supporters, Trump and his paedophile supporters* or Putin and his bombings and land grabbing and so on. * Yahoo fait partie de la famille de marques Yahoo. and others since caught and accused and/or convicted of rape and other sex crimes including with child victims
I dont understand why everyone seems to think the news papers or news outlets they read are always true. We get quotes from the Guardian, or from the Daily mail. Lets face it people all believe what they want to believe and condemn what you dont agree with, has nobody got a mind of their own anymore. We get fed rubbish from all sides, but I'm very wary about quoting any of it.
At least we Brits know that the Guardian is left wing and the Mail is pretty far right. I don't think many in the USA are aware of who owns the media and the spin that puts on any reporting, or non reprting, of news. Rupert Murdoch and family own Fox news which is notoriously biased in its coverage altho I understand he is becoming disenchanted with the orange lump.
"Woke" as a term I believe started with meaning of awakening to see things that are not right. Racism, inequality, abuse of women... the right things to realise that have been tolerated for too long. Then the word became a deragotary term to label any voiced opinion (reasonable or not) that didn't align with the commenter's point of view. It's a short word to type and is emotionally loaded so perfect for social media if you just want to say the values don't resonate with you. I'm surprised there is no "woke" negative emoji yet I'd rather be labelled as "woke" than the opposite as I'm a firm believer in empathy and kindness, and am continuously learning rather surprising and disturbing things people are going through, not obviously visible to my white, employed, "good kind of foreigner" existence. I did rather enjoy the "woke" fuss about Easter Hot Cross Buns that M&S cleverly solved by turning them 45 degrees and labelling Hot X Buns
The Guardian may be left or far left, but it is not owned by anyone other than people who subscribe to it.
There may be @pete. That list is hardly exhaustive but the big national ones are certainly Republican owned and biased. Full of fake news. PBS is left of centre but is state funded and trump is trying to cut off its funds. He finds Sesame Street threatening.
