Not just California and Florida @NigelJ. before the French they had part of Louisiana as weel as Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

Russia sold Alaska to the US because it was bankrupt, primarily due to financial strain from the Crimean War - plus ça change - and they needed the money to rebuild their neighbour. Alaska was considered worthless until the Klondike goldrush but the USA wanted a buffer against the British. It would be much more logical for it to be Canadian.. Russia needed money to rebuild its navy

The funnel webs went to the hospital where they use them for making anti venom.

When I was in Brazil over 40 years ago I visited the Butantan Institute where they were, at that time, breeding snakes for farming their venom to make antidotes.

This wasn't me being brave as they were in a very wide pit about 10' x 10' but at least 4' deep.

The founder of Dignitas has used one of his own clinics to end his life, aged 92. Well, that is certainly a case of following your principles.

Trump should kick out all people from immigrant stock, himself included, and hand everything back to the original owners.
Actually, thinking a bit more deeply, that's a terrible idea as he'd probably end up over here in the UK given his Scottish roots.

But the English are to blame for the initial exiles in America anyway @KT53. The Highland Clearances and the Irish Potato Famine are two that come to mind, along with convicts.

I don't think the English were solely to blame for the Highland Clearances. England has never ruled over Scotland, and while there were some notorious English landowners in Scotland at the time there were plenty of Scots ones too.

Actually I think it was the influx of Puritans that has been the biggest influence in the US. Contrary to popular belief, they were not hounded out of the UK. They left because they themselves were an intolerant bunch who could not bear it that most sensible people rejected their lifestyle. So the genes for devotion to religion got seeded over there very early and the whole "you must do as I say" idea is deeply embedded in the US psyche. The gun lobby and anti-abortion activists are but two examples.

Some how I think the English are to blame for all the problems in the world or that's what some would have us believe.

And the most likely ones to run down the English are the English themselves.
