It's not the offering that's an issue it's the accepting that could be of concern.
Anyway by the time it's delivered, checked for bugs and modified with all the comms gear apparently needed Donald will be an ex president.

        Let's hope so @NigelJ.

@redstar no you can't. The USA doesn't grow the right kind of trees for all its house building needs. Mexico provides a huge percentage of the mineral oils needed for what remains of US industry as well as highly engineered optical, medical and surgical implements you chaps don't have the resources or skills to make yourselves.

Gems and precious metas for all that bling the USA like so much are also imported as you don't have them. There are other less glamorous essential minerals you don't have:

In 2018, the United States was completely dependent on imports for at least the following 18 mineral commodities:

Arsenic, asbestos, cesium, fluorspar, gallium, natural graphite, indium, manganese, natural sheet mica, nepheline syenite, niobium, rare earths, rubidium, scandium, strontium, tantalum, thorium, and vanadium.

Then there's the pharmaceuticals and agricultural products and so it goes on.

You may be alright in your little corner with enough income or savings to buy local organic groceries but the vast majority of your fellow citizens do not and are suffering now from general poverty of education jobs and income with the added burden of the closing down of aid for veterans, the sick and the poor.

Add to that the closing down of essential government services and research institutions and the future is not looking good for your fellow citizens but you're alright so that's OK.

As for that plane, Qatar says it's for his use doing the presidency and then his personal use thereafter. He won't be giving it back.

@Jiffy you have a birth certificate and the UK doesn't have ICE going round sweeping up people indiscriminately and exporting them to unsavoury places.

If speaking Welsh was going to be a condition of living there, half the population (probably more) would have to leave.

What the present US administration forgets is that things don't happen that quickly when it comes to developing mines, processing plants, and factories to use these resources. Nor do trees grow that quickly. Are you going to grow trees for building or use the land for crops for people. All of this is going to require a lot of water so they need to start planning reservoirs at least 10 years before you want the water.

I would think about 95%+ of the UK population don't speak Welsh, @KT53.

Only 1.26% at last count @ViewAhead - 862,700 out of more than 86million.

I do think it's important to conserve languages and cultural traditions as long as it's not nasty stuff like femal circumcision, child brides and other forms of femal suppression.

If you ever need one @Jiffy you can apply for a copy and, presumably, you have a national insurance number which identifies you.

So true. We learned not to trust the Hwawei equipment because it is basically a tricky way to spy and I don't think the plane could be trusted either because of it's origin. But given Trump's penchant for broadcasting military operations on public communication platforms, maybe he wouldn't care. He'd see it as a savings no matter the consequences.

We don't trust Trump's word for anything now. He made a "deal" with CUSMA years ago and now he is reneging. He's a cheat, a liar and a thug. Oh well, we've got 4 months of him done. It's like counting down to Christmas! :)

Must admit I hadn't realised the US could more or less provide for itself. If indeed that is the case, why is the present govt. beggaring about with trade deals ? Best solution would be to keep and use all those goodies within the US and not buy outside the country. Save a lot of money and aggravation ( for itself and others ). Or maybe that claim/belief isn't entirely true :wow:

Many 'developed' countries could produce far more of what they want/need. The simply fact is that getting items produced in 'developing' countries is far cheaper, and people demand 'cheap' above almost anything else.

@Philippa the owners of manufacturing plants exported their jobs to mostly Asian countries but also Mexico and other countries below the border in order to save costs on employment pay, health benefits, safety procedures, pension contributions......... just like Dyson deciding to take his factories outside of EU controlled policies and set up in the east.

This meant greater profits but also lower prices so they they could continue sellig the goods back to the USA citizens who still wanted those clothes, cars, electronics, domestic goods from toilet brushed to cutlery, crockery and furniture so were happy to import them. It has reached such epidemic proportions that the USA cannot now make most of those goods and not at a price or quality acceptable so has to import, hence the trade deficits.

There is also a problem with USA people not wanting to work in noisy, dirty factories - not realising that it much of the technologyhas moved on and it's highly mechanised and even robot and AI led so needs skills beyond those of the available labour market. You can't just build those factories overnight no train the staff. It needs vision and ong term investment in people and infrastructure so is not going to happen under Trump with his 2 minute attention span.

Britain and the EU have gone much the same way in terms of manufactured goods and Britain has even exported call centre jobs to the Indian sub continent. Let's hope this is a wake-up call to make domestic manufacturing a fine career again.
