I watched a programme a couple of years ago about illegal migrants in the USA. They spoke to a number of farmers who said they couldn't operate without them because American citizens didn't want to do hard work and/or get their hands dirty. Similar situation in the UK although most fruit and veg picking jobs were done by those from Eastern Europe.

The illegals don't pick fruit here they mostly laze around in hotels.

The migrant seasonal workers who come over each year and return at the end of the season are a completely different bunch, and should not be confused.

I believe, though I may be wrong, that they are not allowed to work, by law. See above.

@Obelix-Vendée yes sorry . I'm afraid I was just being sarcastic re @redstar claiming that the US can provide for itself. It obviously can't provide everything that it's citizens need/want or expect so no different to everywhere else. Doubtful that every single item (or the componements within it) bought by the average household is Made in America.
If the citizens of a country are not prepared to accept work which they consider to be below them, then who provides and cares for them ? Immigrants who are prepared to move from their own country in order to earn a better living and are willing to do the basic - but vital - work which the rest of us aren't.
Can't really say about the EU as we left France before the Brexit debacle but here in the UK we would not be able to survive without workers from other countries - Agriculture, Construction work, the NHS and Care Homes would be the first ateas to spring to mind. It's totally unrealistic to pretend otherwise altho I'm not sure our present govt. have twigged.
If @redstar is happy with the situation and can sit back and enjoy life under the present regime there are no arguments which will have any impact. Some look further afield, others don't.

They are not allowed to work, I think Tony Blair brought that in, could be wrong.

Its difficult to find what you could make them do that didn't infringe their human rights, they all seem to have a battery of leagal aid lawyers queueing up to make sure they dont get abused.
And the legal profession are the first to say that legal aid doesn't cover their costs when it comes to ordinary British subjects.

As far as the general public is concerned, there does appear to be some confusion between legal/illegal and asylum seekers. Bit of a minefield and time for clarification.

You cant clarify it because the illegals hide behind the asylum seekers title.

Yes Legal migration and seasonal workers are very different.,

It's easy to find the illegals, you just order takeaway and they come to you!

And if they aren't here illegally police could probably have them for no licence or no insurance.

The first foreign agricultural workers in Lincolnshire I really remember were the Portuguese, then the Poles, Latvians and finally the Romanians. Not sure about these days.

@NigelJ I should have made it clearer when I said 'similar situation in the UK'. I meant the lack of willingness of the population to do hard or dirty work, not that the pickers were illegals.
