@Silver surfer, just before Jungle Jane started this thread "M" had started her own thread about the same rose and "M" put a link to her own thread in post #3 in this, Jungle Jane's thread. She posted on her own thread that she wasn't sure what the rose was but she didn't think it had the abundance of thorns of the Rugosa's, which led Sandy and I to think it was Rosa Canina (Dog Rose). Jungle Jane then started this thread with the rose that looks almost identical and that's where the confusion came in. It would seem that "M" has now decided that her own rose is Rugosa but we are still not sure about Jungle Jane's as we can't see any thorns.

I hope the above makes sense for you now. :)

Erm ... not quite :heehee: My post above (#13) is in relation to JJ's rose because I spotted a stem in her picture, on the right hand side, which shows rugosa thorns. It was JJ's picture of a rose that I quoted and appears in post 13  :heehee:

My rose, pictured only in post #2 is *not* a rugosa rose (I already have rugosa roses, so I do appreciate the difference in stems/thorns) and has quite different thorns - photos of which I posted at the weekend, in my original thread, as requested and linked to in this thread).

      So, in short:-
      • Jungle Jane's rose is a RUGOSA (has lots and lots of pale spikey thorns down the stem)
      • Mine was ID's as a DOG ROSE (has red and green stems and occasional hooked/traditional style thorns along the stem).
I thought JJ's rose was the same as mine until, under much closer inspection, I saw the stem with the plethora of spikes.

Now, do remember: a rose, by any other name - including rugosa - still smells as sweet :heehee: ;)

:phew: Gosh this is hard work today :heehee:

I've circled the thorns in JJ's picture
        JJ's rose.jpg

If you click on JJ's picture in post #1, it enlarges a little and you can clearly see the trade mark rugosa spikes.

Just as an aside, I like R. rugosa "Rubrifolia".

Now, you wouldn't be trying to confuse the issue, would you? :heehee:
Is that the two coloured one?

I saw these too but the soft new growth is in itself not definitive. The picture just isn't good enough. I believe this to be a Rugosa and the leaves look like Rugosa too (as do the flowers), but until JJ returns and confirms the extensive thoriness (or not) or posts another picture the discussion will continue to be somewhat subjective. Where is JJ?

I stand corrected "M" and now Silver surfer will be even more confused. I have to add I can't see the thorns on Jane's picture, expanded or otherwise due to eye sight problems.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. I will go back there tomorrow and take better photos. I am suprised that it might be a dog rose as the flowers are really large than the ones I'm used to seeing in the hedgerows (I'm no expert though, hence the thread :snorky:)
