Hi freddy, that's lesser celandine, a cheerful weed. How to get rid of it? You can't!. It has tiny bulbils along the roots and if you pull the plant up it just spreads these around, and before you know it you get 100's of them.

The good news is that they disappear by mid summer.

They do look good in spring, and if you don't mind putting up with them, are amongst the earliest things to flower, providing important nectar for early bees and butterflies.

The bottom of my garden is covered in the stuff, I think it looks rather nice, just as long as it doesn't try to take over the lawn!

The are mixed views on this. Many (including myself) regard it as a pernicious week to be removed at all costs. This is quite difficult, as it has these little tubers and if you leave one in the ground a new plant can grow from it.

On the other hand some people regard as a harmless, rather cheery chappie. In fact one of my friends sells them at car boot sales! But her husband hates them!

I also saw it on sale at a garden centre today. Ranunculus figaria 'Brazen Hussey'. This variety has bronze foliage and a larger flower than normal. I had read about it in Christpher Lloyd's books, as he found it growing wild at Great Dixter, and promoted it. In fact I have just had a Google and found loads of places selling it.

I'm not surprised you like it-a very respectable yellow flower, I wouldn't weed it out either.

I had a similar chat about the sweet woodruff I have in my garden, I love it OH calls it a weed.

Hi folks. Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll leave it there for now, it's not doing any harm :) In fact, it'll bring a little colour into an area that won't have any colour until later in the year. Cheers...freddy.
