When advance booking check the first class availability as it is sometimes the cheaper option.

People tend to book the standard seat option unaware that first class is available , recently did a single first class manchester into London for £15 when the standard seat single was £61.

It pays to shop around and look at different ways to split the journey to save money. A quick example, a day return Manchester to Carlisle £47.70 (only month return available) if you split it Manchester to Preston day return and then Preston to Carlisle day return it would cost you £27.10 saving a massive £20.60.
