    Hello again
Being an Engineer, I'm afraid building work is not my speciality, I am in need of some flagging to be laid 3 m x 4 m and was wondering if anyone could throw some type of cost for a tradesperson to carry out this, are we in the Hundreds or over in thousands ?

    Thanks

    Phil

Hi Phil. I have been quoted £1000 for a similar project. I even had my own slabs. Its money I don't have so I decided it would be better to do it myself. I might even get around to it one day.

Ponder over this. 1. The base area has to be flat and firm.

Start by levelling out the site. DON'T go digging it over. Get rid of the high spots, and if needed, fill in the lower spots.
Have a chat with your local builders merchants. Be honest with them. Give them the measurements and they will advise on the quantity of sand required. Spread the sand over the area. A machine can be hired to vibrate and firm the base. Intermittent levelling, by means of a trulute or a narrow board fixed to a rake, will suffice. When completed, lay the slabs, perhaps a bit of additional sand may be required to balance the slabs. Finally fill in the gaps between the slab edges.

What a clever boy you are.

A neighbour has just had a large area flagged and from their prices , think @Jack Sparrows pricing its near the mark.

However that all depends on the type and quality of flags you specify.
Seems the Indian Sandstone is both cheap and popular these days, comes in 15sq mtr packs from places like Jewsons; though being relatively thin you do need a good base layer, so worth finding someone recommended who does flagging full time rather than any old odd job man.
