Hi I have recently had a retaining wall built in my garden which has given me a 1mx15m raised flower bed leading into a 3x4m bed at the end.

I have planted 600 tulip and daffodil bulbs as an experiment to see how well they do (first time planting spring bulbs).

However I have been reading about tilling the soil and adding some additional drainage material as I’m unsure on the drainage of the soil.

As there is a lot of debris and rubbish in the soil I should of really done this first but I haven’t, so obviously if I were to do this after my bulbs flower then I would lose most if not all bulbs in the process.

    Is it really that necessary?

Should I cut my losses, prepare the soil nicely and replant bulbs next year after nice summer display?

I’m new to this so learning all the time.

    Any help appreciated
    Thanks
    Craig

If it were me, I wouldn’t worry too much. Not sure about Tulips, but Daffs are pretty resilient, just don’t cut down the foliage too soon after flowering, probably best to allow it (the foliage) to die down naturally.

My aim is to plant it all up after bulbs have died back with plenty of contrasting colour, I don’t really want to have to replant the whole lot every year with colourful annuals so recommendations on colourful perennials and shrubs welcome aswell as annuals.

Got a piccy you can share? Tuplips are their best in the first year but daffs just keep on giving and are pretty much bullet proof; if you've planted 600 then you'll have no worries at all replenishing stock should you slice a few bulbs in half planting out new stuff.
I wouldn't bother digging it all out again, just add compost, manure etc on top each year and let the worms do their thing
