I was led to believe that selling allotment produce was not permitted, it was for personal use only?

I only ask because at a recent visit to Alexandra Palace Farmers Market, an individual was selling "Fresh from the allotment" produce from the back of a pick up!

You know, we don't have allotments here. But I would say to this question, who cares. If the person can make a little money, so what.
And I hope there is'nt a rule like that.

Vince, when I had a plot it WAS illegal to sell produce I don`t know if it still applies. But we all used to do it to cover the cost of the seed.

I saw something about this on a tv programme, they said that it's against the rules to sell the produce but the way around it is to sell a small box that had produce in it, that way your selling the BOX not it's content, that could work with a carrier bag too.

If the sole intention of the allotment was to grow and sell produce on a comercial sort of baisis then it would cause problems but the odd vegtable..... whos to know?

A fellow pro gardener I chat too makes around £100 a year by selling off his pumpkins to a local shop for haloween...... it pays for his seeds and plot rental!!!

Ok so, here is a question. You have an allotment---and you grow strawberries, tons of strawberries, so you take the strawberries home and you make strawberry jam. Now you sell the Jam. And the jam is in glass jars with lids etc. Are you not sell the fruit, ah ah, or selling the glass jars and the sugar and the time it took to make the jam.

:) It mainly depends on your area & whether your allotments are owned & run by the local council..... Council allotments it is usually illegal....!!!!
    :thmb:
I would check who owns your allotments & contact them if you are worried..?I know a few who do sell their produce, but always away from the allotment....:wink:

Red .. we are not supposed to make jam and sell it here unless the kitchen meets current European Health & Safety standards - thats one of the 'benefits' of being part of the European Union :( (Of course most people quite rightly ignore this)

Marley is right :thumb:. You don't sell it from your allotment. You will be selling it from home.

To a certain extent I can understand not being allowed to sell from the allotment because the landowner would then have some responsibility for it being a commercial/retail site. Taking that to the extreme - if all allotment holders were selling on the site then it would be a veggie and fruit market :)

Taking the produce home and selling it is unlikely to be against the rules and, anyway, who cares? :thmb:

Near us there is someone who has an allotment and sells his produce from home with a sign on his front lawn advertising it. He has it all bagged up on a little trolley and an honesty box. No one has ever told him he can'r do it and no one has ever pinched his money :)

I was looking at allotment law the other week about this because we have people on our privately owned allotment site who are gradually taking over all the vacant plots and turning it all into one big chicken enterprise. One takes the eggs home from the chucks, ducks, geese, Guneia fowl and sells them to his friends and neighbours and I am pretty sure he doesn't declare any of it to the tax man,and this is a man who has made his money through the s c r a p metal buisness and is the last person who needs the money. We never had a rat problem until all this started in a big way,now we are overrun with them:mad:

The law stated that it was ok for plot holders to sell their surplas stuff and there wouldn't be a problem. It only became so when it was done comercially and then they would be interested,so I wouldn't worry.I am sure the tax people have got far more interesting people to chase for tax evasion than a few allotment holders:p

Kandy, when referring to allotment law are you talking about the Allotments Act which says you must not sell produce grown on an allotment? The same Act which says you CAN have food animals on it, and thes include poultry, fowl and even pigs?
