Hi, can anyone help me find one of those 'porch curtains' that you often find in seaside properties? It protects the front door from bleaching and often resembles a deck chair! Perhaps you have one or know someone that does? I have done some searching but can not find anything like it. tia.

I can vaguely remember seeing many years ago people having a striped curtain that they hung over their front door in warm weather which meant they could open the front door without people looking directly in.
I don't think many people would want to leave their front door left open these days.

I can remember things like a lot of bathplug chains, normally on backdoors in summer, to keep flies out, also remember various coloured strips being used for the same thing.
You could always buy some deckchair canvas and make your own.

I think the OP is looking for something to prevent the sun bleaching their front door - I don't think it's about flies, but I'd think something like this would help.
If it were a 'solid' bit of fabric I think that may cause other problems.

What kind of front door do you have @Meomye? If it's wooden you can treat it with a preservative like OSMO UV-Protection-Oil which gets good reviews on Amazon.

I've used Osmo at work, later we went onto using Owatrol.
Trouble we found with some oil treatments is they collect dirt over a period of time.

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies. No, it is not the dangly 'ribbon' thingy that some of you suggested and no, it is not to leave the front door open as you mentioned @pete or to keep out flies @NigelJ . They were like a curtain but made from a very thick material like a deck chair and were colourful stripes. I believe they were used to stop direct sunlight blazing on to the front door/porch/hallway. I have a new(ish) composite door that I do not want getting baked. Maybe buying canvas is the way, thanks for trying everyone I appreciate it.

I know what you mean about the composite doors.
My composite door faces north, so is unaffected, but the houses opposite that have composite doors are very faded in areas where the sun gets to them.

The problem you may have with a sheet of canvas is that it will be a bit like a sail, and in gusty winds it's really going to blow around a lot unless it's well-weighted at the bottom.
The ribbon type of blind would give the protection you need and wouldn't blow around as much.

Try checking out Custom Sunbrella Outdoor Curtains on etsy, which is where I found them for you. Other suppliers may be available! Not cheap, but I think it's the nearest you'll get to the old heavy canvas ones I remember as a child. :)

This old ironmonger thinks what you describe in OP was a Ranalagh Door Canopy, which is thought came from a company based in Southend.
Haven't seen one in forty years
