Boston Ivy accidently gets the chop!

I wont be the first nor the last to accidently chop a climber whilst doing something else!

I've accidently given my two and a bit year old Boston Ivy "parthenocissus tricuspidata veitchii" the chop at the base, roughly 6" from the ground.

Will it regrow next spring or should i get another plant now so i have one in the spring ready to go into the ground if this one fails to regrow?

Plants tend to be available now, in the autumn and have sold out come spring. I could get one anyway at a fiver just in case i suppose.

 

They are usually quite vigorous so I would expect it would regrow from the base. I suppose the question is would you have somewhere for the spare to go if the original did regrow.

 

I've decided to get a spare because if the one in the ground now doesn't regrow in spring 25, i'll have to wait until the autumn of 25 to get another one which i would plant in spring 26. I'll lose a whole year before i can get started again.

I have a place i could put another one... one of my neighbours has erected a shed right on the boundary that we share, and it's a mess, an eyesore. Bits of this that and tuther, held together with spit and chewing gum. I'll grow it up and over that from my side! Another reason for us to throw a few rocks at each other over the hedge in a couple of years time.

 

They are vigorous growers when they get going so I'm sure the short haircut will just spur it on in spring. They are also a doddle from cuttings so you could stick some of the cut material in the ground next to the parent and I'm sure it will root for you.

 

It will probably grow with new vigour next year.

My chopped Boston Ivy has sprouted the tiniest show of new growth. I need a magnifying glass to see it though!

So i'm now hoping that it'll grow away quickly with some settled warmer weather.
