We have a lovely banana tree in our London garden, it thrived last year but this year it's not coming back well and in fact I believe we've lost all the smaller plants. It appears that the smaller ones have rotted.

We moved in September of 2023, they were doing great and we just left them for winter. Last year they thrived and I took some advice and cut back the leaves at the end of the autumn last year

The soil seems dry, but not crazy dry. We have an irrigation system that seemed to be fine. To the best of my knowledge, the previous owners didn't do anything special to support their growth.

I've included a few images, but would love any advice to try and save the plants that are left.

The smaller pups don't always make it through winter without protection. I've fleeced mine in previous years but last autumn I dug them up and stored them in the greenhouse. One I left in the ground unprotected has died.

The main thing is your bigger plants have survived. Some winters you can even lose them that size, they need wrapping in fleece or packed with straw.

Looks similar to mine, I just cover the base these days with chippings to about 2 foot high, inside a ring of bubble wrap, if we get a hard winter at least the base of the stems survive.

Its doing ok, i wouldn't worry, it still early and I'd not give up on any that have yet to sprout from the base.

    Mine now.

Give it time, the shoots will pop up. Some of mine are only just emerging
