IMG_20250508_212308.jpg We have a lovely established acer in the new garden, and I spotted some seedlings underneath. Will they grow true?

I'm not sure they will be entirely true but still could be nice plants.
    Possibly a new cultivar.

I just wish that my rather nice Japanese Maple would actually produce some seedlings.
Mine looks very similar to @Sian in Belgium 's one.
It came from a batch of three seed grown plants from Westonbirt Arboretum in a three for a fiver deal.

Maple cultivars get grafted onto seedling maples, so if you want an exact copy of the tree then you could graft one onto a seedling in the future.
I like that they don't come completely true from seed. You tend to get some that look near identical but others that you might like more, or might be able to use for other things.

Some growers do grow from cuttings, though these can be more expensive and you are unlikely to find at a supermarket or run of the mill GC.

It is still "cloned" material though. These maples are also quite easy as air layers as well, which the bonsai world love.

I’m about to try air-layering and cuttings on another acer, as it’s in an area to be bulldozed for the renovation work.
