I have to say I don’t like it at all, but it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things and there wouldn’t be enough to go round. I have lots of DA roses in fact all my roses are DA and I visit the garden once or twice every year it’s a lovely place. This one isn’t for me.

I've just been watching the Chelsea programme with Adam Frost and Sophie Raworth where they showed the back story of its development.

It's pretty but wouldn't be my first choice, however I do like the style. Ideal for pollinators.

I was never keen on these striped roses and my first impression was one of disinterest, but I now think this one has considerable merit. They appear to have replicated Rosa gallica versicolor [aka. Rosa mundi] in continuous bloom form, with a low thorn count - I'm hoping it's virtually thornless.. I also love semi double roses as they need less mollycoddling in my dry East Anglian conditions..
        I've ordered one.

I am a fan of David Austin roses, but I strongly dislike this one. The term "circus clown" comes to mind, which is in complete contrast with the David Austin brand as I knew it. Plus, it looks similar to much cheaper, non David Austin roses - £40 for that? Apparently it will be the only release this year. Last year they only released one rose as well, Emma Bridgewater (which I thought was rather underwhelming but I didn't have strong feelings towards it). They did release two very good ones in 2023 (Penelope Lively and Dannahue).

Striped roses have been around for a long time, Rosa mundi is medieval, then we have roses like Ferdinand Pichard and the 19th C. Commandant Beaurepaire. It's possible this rose may be related to these.
'Commandant Beaurepaire' has more of the pink..

Painter's roses is a term given to modern striped roses, as so many are named after famous painters. They tend to lack the subtlety of Rosa mundi and other earlier types.

Lovely @Bluejayway, please post pictures of it's progress. Sadly I don't have room in the ground for it, and it doesn't seem to be suitable for a container.

No, I'm not keen on it, but I imagine it will appeal to plenty of gardeners. My gallicas have stood the test of time and have a subtlety and an elegance that these latest offerings don't possess. True, they only flower once, which is the drawback, and they do get a bit out of hand, but the scent is lovely and they're reliable and hardy. I like their history, too.
This one doesn't 'do' it for me.

I love all Roses but I will say on this occaision I think Rosa "Mundi" just has the edge on this new one if I am honest but that is only my personal opinion and I wish you all the success with it please keep us updated with its progress:smile:

I used to have Rosa mundi and Honorine de Brabant and I remember they were both deliciously scented. Even DA state this doesn't have much scent. And Honorine was repeat flowered and not very prickly.

I can’t decide if I like it or not. Will reserve judgement until we see it in real life. I have one striped rose “Crazy for You” which is a bright, beautiful mix of white, pink and raspberry with a hint of yellow. More splashes than stripes. My sister bought it for us as a wedding present so it has sentimental value as well

I wouldn’t grow a plant I really disliked the name of so in a way I am glad this rose isn’t to my taste. I wouldn’t want anything in my garden to commemorate our present royal representative.
